ABUJA – Much needed succour came the way of women and girl children at the Internally Displaced Persons camp at Durumi, in Abuja on Wednesday 13th May 2026. This came about as a result of activities lined up by the Wuse Zone of the Red Cross Community Development Service(CDS) group of Youth Corps Members, to alleviate the difficulty residents face as pertains access to hygienic practices and products in particular, and to better their standard of living in general.
Residents usually complain of poor access to food, potable water, healthcare, and education. Malnutrition, waterborne diseases, and lack of medical care are common issues as well.

The theme of the event tagged “Humanitarian and Menstrual Hygiene Outreach” aimed to support the Girl child, vulnerable women and girls through menstrual hygiene education and the distribution of relief packages.

Each person received a relief pack containing sanitary pads, rice, cooking oil, seasoning cubes, and sachet tomatoes to help support their households. Mosquito nets were also provided to mothers to help prevent malaria.
To provide support to the CDS group were officials of the Red Cross, represented by Ikenna Omenikolo, and the National Youths Service Corps CDS Coordinator, Halima Abubakar. Sponsors and partners included Ofure Global International Services, Nextstone Works, and yours truly, Health Pharm Media.

Speaking with Health Pharm Media on the sidelines of the event, the CDS President, Pearl Kansi, shared the group’s expectations and the reason behind philanthropic venture. “The environment here is not conducive, and there are health issues associated with poor menstrual hygiene. I want to ensure that some of these health issues are averted, and these women are made knowledgeable on better ways to take care of themselves”, she stated.
The IDP camp in Durumi, is one of several informal IDP camps in Abuja housing people displaced by Boko Haram and other conflicts in the Northeast of Nigeria. Idriss Ibrahim Halilu is the camp Coordinator.
The Red Cross CDS NYSC Outreach is a quarterly project aimed at bridging the gap between health education and poverty alleviation, at vulnerable and impoverished locations, in and around Abuja.
