ABUJA-The National Emergency Medical Services And Ambulance System (NEMSAS) has identified a challenge in the prevalence of trained and professional paramedics in the emergency medical services sector.
This was brought to light by the National Programme Manager of NEMSAS, Dr. Doubra Emuren, during a two-day training workshop to enhance communication between the programme, the media and the general public.
Dr. Doubra Emuren pointed out to participants at the workshop, which took place at Solina Centre for International Development and Research, 8 Libreville Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, that there is only one university in the whole nation that trains paramedics. He said this has created a lacuna being filled up by other health care staff who have to abandon their core duty posts to manage the emergency medical services sector.
The National Programme Manager of NEMSAS mentioned that there were about one thousand paramedics nationwide, but provided a suggestion where the country could train young gradutes intensively for six months, while retraining continued afterwards on the job, thereby creating employment for the teeming youths at the same time.
Dr. Doubra Emuren expressed optimism in finding a lasting solution to this lingering problem while he was speaking during his presentation at the workshop titled: NEMSAS – Overview, Achievements and Challenges, with over seventeen representatives of various media houses present.
Also present was a media legend of high repute, Chief Mrs Moji Makanjuola, who gave the opening address, and Dr. Bala Abubakar, Technical Assistant to Nigeria Emergency Medical Treatment Committee(NEMTC), who represented the Chairman, Prof. Ismail Musa Jibrin.
A group photograph was taken at the end of the workshop with NEMSAS boss, Dr. Doubra Emuren, staff of NEMSAS present and resource personnel from Solina Centre for International Development and Research.
