ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has heralded the show of support from Nigeria even as the continent battles the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which has continued it’s spread through the Democratic Republic of Congo and has berthed in Uganda.

This recognition was noted by the Director General of the Africa CDC, Dr. Jean Kaseya, on his official Facebook account, on Wednesday, May 20th 2026, confirming the interface between his organisation and Nigeria towards containing the spread of the Ebola Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which has no vaccine presently.

He stated that “Today, I received a call from H.E. Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who expressed solidarity with the countries affected by the #EbolaOutbreak and reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to support ongoing response efforts in any way needed.”
Dr. Jean Kaseya applauded the gesture and welcomed more collaboration from other African countries and non-governmental agencies towards checking the spread of the Ebola Virus.
“Africa CDC deeply appreciates this strong gesture of African solidarity and partnership as we continue to work closely with Member States and partners to contain the outbreak and protect lives.”he noted.
Africa CDC declared the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security on May 18, 2026, which lets it lead and coordinate continental response. It is saddled with the responsibility of mobilizing financial and technical resources, deploying emergency response teams, reinforcing surveillance and lab systems, and accelerating preparedness in neighboring countries at risk like Rwanda and South Sudan.
