ENUGU – The National Emergency Medical Services And Ambulance System (NEMSAS) has successfully set up ambulance systems across thirty-three states and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, and have recorded about 76,000 beneficiaries between 2025 and first quarter of 2026, 60% of whom are pregnant women.
This statistics was provided by the National Programme Manager of NEMSAS, Dr. Doubra Emuren, during an interview with the press, at the end of his familiarisation visit to Enugu State.
He added that the programme aims for eight to fifteen minutes response time for emergency services nationwide and will soon achieve that mandate.
When asked of his expectations of Enugu SEMSAS, he said ” We expect the Enugu State Government to invest in emergency medical services. The only way to defeat emergencies is to prepare for emergencies, we can’t say “It’s not my portion”, they have to make sure communication is functional, have equitable spread of ambulances, and work with the private sector”.
Dr. Doubra Emuren also proposed the proper equipping of infrastructure in tertiary facilities to have proper triage areas, resuscitation areas, making sure there were enough bed spaces in Accident and Emergency units, and ensuring safe blood availability and oxygen in the hospitals.
The National Programme Manager of NEMSAS said the programme takes care of Nigerians who cannot afford medical care during emergencies for forty-eight hours at no cost and pays for free transportation in rural areas for pregnant women to enable them get to the nearest medical facility.
Dr. Doubra Emuren was received in Enugu State by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu and the Coordinator of Enugu SEMSAS, Dr. Marcus Agu, and was taken to the SEMSAS office for inspection and assessment of infrastructure and ambulances on ground.
